Everyone is paying attention to AIs art skills as AI presents its own work or AIs works are being sold at hundreds of millions won at auctions. Not only artistic skills but also the creativeness of AI are developing. Then what if the robots draw human portraits by its own hands?

Ai-da which draws humans will be introduced in this article.

Ai-da is an AI artist which is called the first robot artist introduced in the UK in 2019.

Ai-da has been made for about two years and Engineered Arts a British robot company made its body and the University of Oxford incorporated the AI algorithm to it and the scientists and researchers of the University of Leeds designed and participated in the production of its arm. The body arms and face are made in a similar to humans so it feels like a real person is drawing a portrait.

The name Ai-da is originated from the first female programmer Ada Lovelace. She is also famous as the daughter of British romantic poet Byron.

The eyes of Ai-da observe things with the camera and the built-in computer software envisions the work and the robots hands are bionicly designed to grab the brush and complete the painting.

It has a characteristic that it is able to draw people or objects just as it sees them.

Ai-da can do not only paintings but also simple conversations. Someone asked How long does it take to draw a picture? then Ida replied It takes from 45 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes for each painting and now I am drawing a new self-portrait.

It can look around and when someone gets close it steps back or blinks and acts as if it were human.

Ai-das first exhibition was held under the theme of Unsecure future. After successfully completing the project by making more than $1 million (about 1.1 billion won) in auction profits last year it held its second exhibition at the Design Museum in London in May this year.

Design Museum was established in 1989 and has a history of holding design exhibitions and was selected as one of the worlds top five museums in the Times in 2007. It is quite noteworthy that Ai-da an AI opened an art exhibition at this museum.

The second exhibition is held under the theme of Self-portrait of Ai-da exhibited self-portraits drawn by AI which drawn itself in the mirror. In addition it also displayed AI fonts designed by Ai-da.

And at the pre-open event portraying the face of producer Aidan Meller was also presented. Ai-da completed a portrait of Aidan Mellor moving its eyes up and down for about 45 minutes.

The producer Aidan Meller said Ai-da is not an expensive printer. We dont know what she is going to draw. I am pleased to introduce a professional humanoid artist pioneering and creating a new field of artificial intelligence art.

He continued I want her to create very complex and detailed canvas works or 3D works that humans cannot physically complete.

The drawing process makes art works by calculating the route according to the algorithm and interpreting the coordinates. Only Ai-da knows what kind of painting she is drawing.

Meantime The New York Times also described Ai-da as a new voice in the art world. It is time for us to listen to new voices as the area of creation which we thought was humans unique ability expands to artificial intelligence (AI) robots.
